Get Started with Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  Without it, you can get tired and crabby.  I mean think about it, when it's time for breakfast you haven't actually eaten in at least 8 to 12 hours.  That's a long time and its pretty much all your body can think about.  Without it you could get a headache and have a really hard time concentrating at school or in activities. So, always eat breakfast.  You need carbohydrates, protein and fiber. Get started with some juice, perhaps a banana and some sort of bread, like a bagel.  You'll feel a lot better and you won't be nearly as sluggish through your day.

Bicycle Safety Day Every Day

February 13th is technically bicycle safety day.  But it's always a good idea to follow the rules of safety when you're going to be pedaling around.  Follow these guidelines and you'll have a lot more fun behind the handle bars.

  1. Always wear a helmet.
  2. Make sure people around you, including in their vehicles can see you by placing reflectors on your bike and wearing bright colored clothes.
  3. Never ride across intersections or crosswalks. Get off and walk your bike across.
  4. When passing other bikes or people, do so on the left.
  5. Ride on the right-hand side of the street.
  6. Inspect your bike regularly to make sure everything is in tact and that your tires are well inflated.

Chinese New Year: Year of the Rat

Today is the beginning of the Chinese New Year.  It's marked by the Lunar calendar which is based on the moon's phases instead of the earth's rotation around the sun. Chinese families decorate and throw parties where they exchange gifts to mark the occassion and bring good luck for the coming year.  Some celebrations last as long as a month.  This particular year is the year of the rat.  It's one of 12 animals that take turns getting a year. So it's been 12 years since the rat was honored. Find rat crafts to make for honoring the rodent.  Some even believe those born in the year of the rat will have rat traits like being imaginative and sly.
