Happy Halloween

Tyler_halloween_2007 For kids, this is one of the funnest nights of the year.  But when you're out trick-or-treating make sure you also stay safe by following these rules.

  1. If you're wearing a dark costume, make sure you put some kind of reflector on it so drivers can see you.
  2. Make sure your costume fits.  Otherwise you might fall.
  3. Only go to well lit places.
  4. Make sure an adult checks all of your candy before you eat any of it.
  5. Carry a flashlight.

KidsCast wishes you a safe and fun Halloween!

Awarding Nutrition

Did you know that your school could get awarded for giving you a healthy menu at lunch time?  The Healthier School Challenge recognizes elementary schools that voluntarily meet nutrition criteria established by the USDA's Food and Nutrition Service. The school will get either Gold, Silver, or Bronze status. You can improve your health by eating fruits and vegetable and whole grain wheat products. You'll feel better and maybe even get better grades. Find out if your school is part of the Healthier School Challenge and see which color status you're eating under.

An Apple A Day

October is National Apple Month.  It's a great reminder to kids that eating healthy is a great way to live.  Did you know there are 2,500 different varieties of apples grown in the United States?  They come in many shades of red, yellow and green.  Besides apple pie, apples are used in making sauces, ciders and trail mixes among other things. Apples are a healthy snack and a great source of one essential nutrient, fiber.  They're not only a great source of fiber but have no fat, salt or cholesterol.  keep in mind though, the peel is what carries the most healthy ingredients.  So you should eat it. Get more apple facts here.
